Scholarships inspire study of science

Each year since 2003, AgResearch's Animal Genomics Section has given three Hands-On Science Scholarships to Maori students via the Otago Mana Pounamu Awards.

Hands-On Science is an annual, six-day event held at the University of Otago in early January. Its goal is to demonstrate, in an interactive environment, some of the activities that scientists are involved in and to encourage talented young New Zealanders to consider science as a career. Hands-On Science is open to students entering Years 11 to 13.

To date, seven young women and eight young men have taken up the AgResearch Hands-On Science Scholarships and, while preference is given to Otago students, some North Island students have also been supported.

Targeting young Maori students is in line with AgResearch's aim to increase Maori involvement and capacity in research, science and technology.

AgResearch's Human Resources team and Maori Strategist Roger Pikia are working to create a number of science scholarships for Maori students to provide support and mentoring opportunities. The scholarships will also raise the profile and highlight the importance of pastoral research and its links with the Maori people.
